Moving checklist to copy and paste

Five phases, from 60 days out to your first week in the new place, in lists ready to paste into Experto and share with whoever moves with you.

Moving house means dozens of small tasks, and almost all of them have a right day to happen. This moving checklist splits everything into five phases, from 60 days before to your first week in the new place, each one in a block ready to copy and paste into Experto.

Set up a list just for the move, share it with whoever is moving with you and check things off together. Nobody has to ask in the family chat whether the internet has been transferred yet.

How to use this moving checklist

Create a list called Move and paste one phase at a time into it.

  1. Click Copy list on the phase's block.
  2. Open the Move list and paste into the New item field, or press ⌘V on Mac or Ctrl+V on Windows with the list open.
  3. Check the preview in the Create several items window and create the tasks.

Each line becomes a task, and a line that starts with a space becomes its description.

Already know the moving date? In the preview, add a line like End: 11/20/2026 6:00 PM under each task, and anything late turns red. The full walkthrough is in the tutorial on how to paste multiple tasks at once.

60 days before: decide and book

What to do before moving starts with the big decisions, which hold up everything else if they slip.

Set the moving date
Give notice to the landlord or agency
Check the notice period in your lease
Get quotes from three moving companies
Ask whether they pack, take apart and reassemble furniture
Sort what goes, what you donate and what you sell
Measure the rooms in the new place
Check that the sofa, bed and fridge fit through the door

Renting? Check your lease for the notice period. In Brazil, for example, the Tenancy Law requires at least 30 days' written notice on open-ended leases.

30 days before: bills, address and boxes

Now it's time to switch bills and addresses and start filling boxes.

Schedule power and water at the new place
Transfer or cancel the internet
Ask for installation the day after the move
Update your address with the bank, work and school
Update the car's address with the vehicle registry
Buy boxes, tape and bubble wrap
Pack what you barely use
  Books, off-season clothes, decorations

Own a car? Look up the deadline to update your address where you live. In Brazil, for example, article 123 of the Brazilian Traffic Code gives 30 days when you move within the same city, and moving to another city requires a new vehicle registration.

Moving week

In the last week, everything revolves around the big day.

Confirm day and time with the moving company
Book the elevator or let the front desk know
Defrost and clean the fridge
  Unplug it the day before
Set aside documents, medicine and valuables
They go with you, not in the truck
Pack the first night box
Bedding, towels, chargers, medicine, plates and cutlery
Label each box with its destination room

The first night box works like a short trip suitcase. The travel checklist helps you remember what usually gets left behind.

Moving day

On the day, the list becomes the script for the move, from the power meter to the last box.

Write down the power, water and gas meter readings
A photo of each one, at both places
Check room by room before the truck leaves
Hand over the keys to the old place
Check the boxes on arrival
Set up the beds first

Whoever stays at the old place checks it and hands over the keys, and whoever goes ahead meets the truck. With a shared list, each person checks off their part and the other sees it right away, with no phone calls in the middle of traffic.

First week in the new place

In the first week, the new place finds its rhythm.

Unpack room by room
  Kitchen and bathroom first
Change the door locks
Do the first big grocery run
Add the new bills with their due dates
Update your address for online shopping

For that first grocery run, the complete grocery list is already split by aisle. The new home's bills fit in a list that comes back every month, as the guide to daily, weekly and monthly routines shows.

Whoever moves with you splits the tasks with a Pull

Share the list and each person pulls in what they'll do, with nobody having to hand out tasks.

  1. In the Move list settings, under Sharing, choose Whole account and, under What others can do, Everyone can edit.
  2. Taking care of the internet? Give the task a Pull. It shows up at the top of your first list, and on the moving list everyone sees who has it.
  3. Done? Complete it, and the task is completed on the moving list too.
  4. Won't make it in time? Give it a Push, and the task goes back, free for someone else to take.

Whatever one of you checks off shows up for the other right away. The other person just needs to be in your account, and Experto is free forever for up to 2 members, as the personal organization page shows.

Frequently asked questions

How far ahead should I start planning a move?

Two months give you room to get quotes, give notice and switch bills without rushing. Moving sooner than that? Start with the 30 day phase and fold the 60 day tasks into it.

What can't be missing from a house moving list?

The documents and medicine that travel with you, the meter readings at both places and the first night box. Without them, the first night in the new place gets complicated.

How do I organize a move with kids?

Give them tasks their size, like packing their toys and choosing what goes in the first night box. Kids can join as guests and check off their own tasks, just like in the kids' birthday party checklist.
